1. Introduction
My name is Jordan, and I’m a Systems Engineering student at Universidad Fidélitas in Costa Rica. This is my final report for the WP Credits program, where I had the opportunity to contribute to the WordPress Photos Team.
Throughout the program, I worked on a project called “Landscapes: The Beauty of Nature and Cities of the World,” with the goal of contributing 30 landscape photographs to the WordPress Photo Directory.
This report reflects on my experience, the work I completed, the challenges I faced, and everything I learned along the way. It was a great opportunity to explore open-source collaboration while combining my interest in photography with a meaningful contribution to the WordPress community.
2. Teams and Projects I Contributed To
I contributed to the WordPress Photos Team, which focuses on building a collection of freely available photographs that WordPress users can discover and use in their websites and blogs.
My project was titled “Landscapes: The Beauty of Nature and Cities of the World.” The main objective was to submit 30 photographs showcasing different landscapes, natural environments, and cities from around the world.
I chose this project because I enjoy photography and appreciate how images can communicate ideas, capture unique places, and make digital content more engaging.
By completing these contributions, I helped expand the collection of visual resources available to the WordPress community.
3. Learning Resources
To understand how the Photos Team works and how to contribute properly, I used the team’s documentation and guidelines as my main learning resources.
Some of the resources that helped me were:
- WordPress Photo Directory: https://wordpress.org/photos/
- WordPress Photos Team: https://make.wordpress.org/photos/
- WordPress Photo Directory Guidelines: https://wordpress.org/photos/guidelines/
These resources helped me understand the submission process, image requirements, and the standards photographs should meet before becoming part of the directory.
The documentation was especially useful when I was getting started because it gave me a clearer understanding of how to prepare and submit my photographs.
4. Challenges and Solutions
During the program, I encountered a few challenges that helped me become more organized and confident throughout the contribution process.
1. Understanding the submission guidelines
At the beginning, I needed some time to become familiar with the Photos Team requirements and understand what makes a photograph suitable for the Photo Directory. I addressed this by reviewing the documentation carefully and using the guidelines as a reference before submitting my images.
2. Selecting the right photographs
Another challenge was finding 30 photographs that matched the theme of my project while maintaining variety. I wanted to include different types of landscapes, natural scenery, and city environments rather than submitting images that all looked similar. I handled this by being more selective and paying attention to the quality and diversity of the photographs.
3. Managing my time
Balancing the project with my university responsibilities and other activities was another challenge. I had to organize my time to make consistent progress and avoid leaving too many submissions until the final weeks. Breaking the project into smaller goals helped me complete all 30 photographs.
5. My Contributions
I’m happy to say that I successfully completed my original goal of contributing 30 landscape photographs to the WordPress Photos project.
My contributions focused on showcasing the beauty of different places around the world, including natural environments and urban landscapes.
These photographs were part of my project, “Landscapes: The Beauty of Nature and Cities of the World,” and were intended to provide useful visual resources for WordPress users.
You can explore my contributions through the following link:

Note: You can add the individual links to your 30 submitted photographs here once you have them available. This will make your report more complete and allow readers to see your actual contributions.
6. Key Learnings from the WP Credits Program
One of my biggest takeaways from this experience is that open-source projects depend on people who are willing to share their time, knowledge, and creativity. Even a contribution that seems small can become part of something useful for a much larger community.
I also learned that contributing to WordPress involves following guidelines, understanding community standards, and being open to learning throughout the process.
Another important lesson was discovering how different interests and skills can come together in an open-source environment. I was able to combine my interest in photography with technology and contribute something that other people around the world can use.
Most importantly, I learned that you don’t need to be an expert to start contributing. Being willing to learn, stay consistent, and participate is already a valuable first step.
7. New Skills Gained
Throughout the program, I developed and strengthened several skills.
Technical and practical skills:
- Understanding the WordPress Photo Directory and its submission process.
- Learning about image requirements and photography guidelines.
- Selecting and organizing photographs for a specific project.
- Understanding how open-source platforms manage community contributions.
- Becoming more familiar with WordPress and its contributor ecosystem.
Personal and soft skills:
- Time management and organization.
- Attention to detail.
- Working independently toward a specific goal.
- Following community guidelines and standards.
- Being open to feedback and continuous improvement.
- Understanding the value of collaboration in global communities.
8. Personal Reflections and Next Steps
Looking back at my experience with the WP Credits program, I’m glad I decided to join the WordPress Photos Team. What started as an opportunity to contribute 30 photographs became a valuable learning experience that allowed me to explore a different side of technology and creativity.
One thing that surprised me was how much thought goes into maintaining a community resource like the WordPress Photo Directory. It’s not simply about uploading images; it’s about making sure that the content is useful, accessible, and follows shared standards.
My favorite part was being able to contribute something connected to my personal interests. Photography is a great way to capture different perspectives of the world, and knowing that my contributions could help someone create a blog, website, or other digital project makes the experience even more meaningful.
As a Systems Engineering student, I see this experience as a reminder that learning doesn’t happen only in the classroom. Participating in real communities and contributing to projects used by people around the world can also be an important part of personal and academic growth.
Now that I’ve completed my goal of 30 photographs, I would like to continue exploring opportunities within the WordPress community. I would also be interested in discovering other teams and learning about different ways to contribute.
Overall, WP Credits has been a rewarding experience. I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate, learn something new, and become part of a global open-source community. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and excited to keep learning beyond the program.
